Staying Alive

Just a quick one from me today. I’m obviously disappointed with the loss and performance against ManUre but am very thankful that it was only by one goal. What with the unholy trinity of strikers that Froggie has at his disposal coupled with the advantage of playing at home, one’d have expected more goals from ManUre. Indeed, they may even pay for it and Froggie may suffer sleepless nights because of it.

Admittedly, Arsenal were not strong enough. Theo on the right could not get into action. Nasri was struggling in midfield while Cesc who was supposed to link with Ade always seemed too far from his striker. The real star was Almunia who frustrated Froggie and ManUre and he performed even better than Petr Cech on Tuesday; seven good saves in the first half-hour alone where United took 65 per cent of possession.

Even Wenger who desperately seeks the big European title to add to his CV admitted Arsenal were lucky to get away with only one-goal defeat. But hey the next leg will be at the Emirates and the Gunners have never before lost a European semi-final. In reaching the 2006 final, a defence of Emmanuel Eboue, Philippe Senderos, Kolo Toure and Mathieu Flamini created a new Champions League record in the length of time without conceding a goal. If Wenger could do it then with that makeshift back four, he can repeat it again. Yes, it’s advantage to ManUre - but Arsenal aren’t out yet.

It’s A Heat-wave

Sing to Bonnie Tyler’s It’s A Heartache:

It’s a heat wave
Nothing but a heat wave
Hits you when it’s too hot
Hits you ‘til you wanna melt down
It’s a nature’s game
Nothing but a nature’s game
Standing in the baking sun
Feeling like melting down

Oh God, it’s been so very hot the last few weeks even the occasional showers don’t have much effect. Funny, I always associate April as a rainy month (OK, I keep thinking of April Showers) and I can’t recall April ever being this hot before. It gets so uncomfortable at times that I wonder if the temperature has already hit 40C. I keep thinking if this is how living in the Middle East is like. And I don’t know how the other mammal animals with their fur can stand this heat. OK, I’m beginning not to talk sense – blame it on the heat!

Watched He’s Just Not That Into You on Saturday and quite enjoyed it. I cringed watching Gigi trying to find a guy and thinking some blind date was into her. Never, ever make that mistake dear. But I enjoy her ‘accidental’ friendship (if I can term it that) with Alex, the charming and good-looking bar owner (yup, Justin Long is an eye candy alright). Like I said, it was quite an enjoyable movie and it made me think too.

Went for a (long overdue?) haircut Saturday afternoon and it couldn’t come too soon. I doubt I’ll ever keep a long hair again – it’s been ages since I last kept it but of course that was in the good old days in England. Not with this heat will I sport a long hair ever again just as I’ll never ever wear a pair of jeans again ‘cause they’re just not practical wear in this weather/country! (The last time I had to travel in early spring, I had to hunt for my old pair of jeans which thankfully I still fit in. Not going to buy any more new pair of jeans ever).

The team managed by the youngest manager in the Premier League travelled south to meet the team captained by the youngest skipper in the Premier League yesterday. Fabulous Cesc Fàbregas aka Captain Fantastic fired two goals in the Sunday match against Boro. I was so delighted with his brace but am not too hot about his facial hair experiment (just as I’m not too hot about Theo’s facial hair experiment either). I thought Shava looked a bit tired but hey he is the BBC Sport Player Rater man of the match (8.72 on 90 minutes). He didn’t score yesterday but hey neither did Torres a day earlier. Oh, and Cesc may have inadvertently saved Hull from relegation too.

Mummy said he looked like an Arab. Heh.

Happy days mate, happy days. Now if only they’re not so hot. Well at least it rained heavily yesterday afternoon.

Earth Day 2009

Happy Earth Day to all. I try to do my part as best as I can: I carry a shopping bag when I do grocery shopping; I carry a water bottle so that I won’t add to the number of bottles that need to be recycled; am quite energy-efficient at home (the heat wave of late is sure challenging though); recycle whenever I can; and take the public transportation. I’m still thinking of other ways to reduce my impact on the environment, any suggestions? Just don’t ask me to cut down on travelling and anyway, I fly economy when travelling on my own (the more passengers the plane carry in economy means the less fuel burned per passenger) and I have taken to packing lightly too (every kg of weight that a plane carries increases the amount of fuel that it burns, so reducing your luggage weight actually reduces your environmental impact).

~~~~~~~~
It was a weak Arsenal side that travelled to Anfield: they were devoid of Robin van Persie, Emmanuel Adebayor, Manuel Almunia, Gael Clichy, William Gallas and Johan Djourou.
And what a crazy incredible match it was. I said crazy because it was such a strange match, strewn with defending errors (on both sides) and superb goals (again on both sides). Russian star Arshavin became the first man to score a quartet of goals (and his first ever quartet of goals) in a League game at Anfield in 53 years - with Arsenal’s only four shots on target. Four attempts, four on target, four goals. Both teams had to settle for a draw and frankly neither side deserved to lose. For more pictures, go here.
BBC Sport Player Rater man of the match: Arsenal’s four-goal Russian roulette Andrey Arshavin after that extraordinary display, scoring a round-number pleasing 9.00. His first quartet of goals too.
Oh and I want to share this quote from Arseblogger:
‘Arshavin himself must have been upset not to start (in the FA semi-final match), particularly in a game against a team managed by his national coach. He doesn’t strike me as a sulker though and the perfect response tonight would be the kind of performance that says ‘Next time, Arsène, pick me.’’
Ar - Ar – Arshavin’s over from the Russian scene
Another Arsenal legend is born
Ar - Ar - Arshavin’s Russia’s greatest goal machine
And now at Arsenal he’ll carry on
From Russia With Love indeed.
High School Reunion
The idea for the reunion was mooted a few months ago but as with many ideas, it soon fizzled out after early-January this year. That was until Hanim asked me if it was OK for her to take charge. I was only too happy to let someone be in control and agreed (little did I know she had other plans for me). So Hanim kick-started the whole process, reignited the idea, secured the booking of the reunion venue (a seven-room bungalow in Port Dickson) by advancing the deposit, and pursued and persuaded us to come. Zara was instrumental in scouting for the venue, shopping for the door-gift (after consulting Hanim and myself. I suggested a bath towel for everyone), negotiating with the caterers to ensure we would not starve during the weekend and organising the telematch on Saturday evening, while yours truly was tasked to be the treasurer (and believe me, I had my fair share of headaches trying to reconcile my accounts).
I initially wanted to leave after work on Friday but as the day drew nearer found I couldn’t extricate myself from work as early as I would have liked (gosh, how work is raining on me, it’s not even funny anymore). So I made arrangements to go with Lin but on Thursday evening, she called to say she would likely have to work throughout the weekend. So I quickly sent a text to Debbie asking if I could follow her instead and called Zara asking if she could collect the prizes for the games so that if in the worst case scenario I had to somehow go to Port Dickson on my own by bus, at least I wouldn’t be saddled down with the prizes. Thankfully Debbie replied to say that there’s a vacant spot in Misah’s car for me. Phew!
We met up Saturday morning at Bandar Tasik Selatan LRT station and made our way to PD. We were talking and laughing so much that we almost missed the turning to the highway (and everyone in the car screamed in unison). It was a good thing there was no vehicle behind us and light traffic all along the way to PD, well at least until we neared the road construction near our venue.
We did what we do best after meeting a group of us – chatting, laughing, screaming and munching (in no particular order!). After all, it was the time where we all broke away from our multiple roles as an employee, a boss, a daughter, a mother (well, except for MZ and Nani Y), a wife, a sister, an aunt and just be ourselves, even if it was only for a few hours, even if it was only for a day (for those who didn’t stay the night). Noor Z had to leave early as her parents were on their way from Perlis so I didn’t get to meet her. And N.Burn and Haida were running late so our group photo didn’t have them there.
After lunch, resting and performing prayers, we had some indoor games before hitting the beach for our telematch. I must say I was very happy with my lovely friends – they all participated in the games sportingly. I love you gals! I must mention that it was a very hot, humid weekend with hardly any breeze (even at the beach).
After evening prayers, we had BBQ dinner before a ‘Guessing Game’ and slideshow presentation. Then some of us turned off the lights and watched Mamma Mia (back in school, we had this weekly ‘Film Show’ on Saturday evenings, something I looked forward to every week, never mind that sometimes they screened pretty lousy movies). I managed to drag N.Burn to the stall next door to watch the FA semi-final between Arsenal and Chelshit. I’m not going to say much about it except I wonder why Wenger didn’t start Shava or Nasri. Diaby was awful, Fabianski made some mistakes and the team looked a bit nervous. I was just so gutted and sulked all the way back to the bungalow. Heck, it was one of our two chances at silverware this season and it’s not as if the Champions League is that easy to win.
It drizzled early Sunday morning so no walk along the beach. After clearing up the place (back at school, we had housecleaning chore every Sunday morning), we chatted, took more pictures and packed (again, in no particular order). We finally and reluctantly left but not before agreeing to visit our college grounds (I still call my school ‘college’).
We met Rezeq at college (she actually came to the venue but we had all left then). We walked around a bit – I visited my old dormitory block my old classroom before joining the others at the Hall. We left after an hour or so as it was threatening to rain (in fact it did and we were caught in the downpour on the highway).
Zara dropped me off at 2.45 pm or thereabout. I was just so knackered that I fell asleep on the couch through the Chinese Grand Prix (the plan was to rest while watching F1) and only woke up way after the race had ended.
There were already talks about the next reunion but for now, I still need to recover from this one! I am that knackered...
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Wenger made five changes to the Super Outsiders side which drew at El Madrigal last week, largely due to injuries. Bacary Sagna had a virus earlier in the day and joined William Gallas, Gael Clichy and Johan Djourou on the sidelines as well as keeper Manuel Almunia. In come Lukasz Fabianski, Mikael Silvestre, Emmanuel Eboue and Keiran Gibbs. Yes, we really had a makeshift defence to face the Yellow Submarine. Robin van Persie passed a fitness test and so played in place of Denilson, who dropped to the bench.
Theo scored the first goal after collecting a Cesc flick before running clear and chipping in. Cesc was again
instrumental in the second goal when his towering header found van Persie. Adebayor accepted Van Persie’s pass and his prodded finish found the far corner to make it two nil on the hour mark (even Wenger was excited enough to do his version of Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It). Robin then scored the home side’s third goal from the penalty spot after Theo was challenged in the box. The Gunners had torpedoed the Yellow Submarine alright. I’m pretty sure Villarreal were only to happy to hear the final whistle.
We will meet ManUre in a fortnight. Said
Cesc: ‘We could have scored a few more tonight but let’s not be greedy. I think for the last five or six games of the season I will be at the peak of my game.’ But best hold the pizza, Cesc, as the article advises.
Hard to believe that this is the team which lost five in the first 14 games enough to attract criticisms against Wenger. But the lads have mental strength – even when their Champions League spot for the next season was hanging by a thread a mere few weeks ago – to bounce back. And they had gone unbeaten in the 18 games following their last defeat. There was also a decisive factor in Rome when they missed the first penalty and still had to come up against penalty specialists in the likes of Totti, Baptista, Montella and Vucinic. Perhaps that was the
turning point in the team’s self-confidence and mental strength.
BBC Sport Player Rater man of the match: Arsenal’s Theo Walcott 8.65 (on 90 minutes).
First test passed for this unfamiliar Arsenal defence. Now let’s see how they fare against Chelsea this weekend...
Another dead rodent awaited my return from work on Tuesday courtesy of Ginger Ale no doubt. *Sigh* I know other neighbours feed him too so why me?!
Easter Weekend
Traffic was extraordinarily heavy Friday lunchtime. Oh Friday jams are always bad but it seemed even worse that day. Not surprisingly we also had problems finding a parking spot. Joined Delia and Sal for lunch at Al Marjan, the Lebanese and Persian resto at KLCC, where I sighted an eye candy. He was tall, fair and dishy and he smiled at me as he walked past our table to the buffet area. When we passed him on our way out, he tilted his head and smiled at me again. Even Sal remarked on it.
There’s no sale in April and yet I managed to spend on Saturday on my return trip to KLCC. Oh dear. I also watched Knowing in between my shopping spree. The movie build-up was good and had me at the edge of my seat at times but I found the ending massively disappointing. What a let-down really. When we emerged from the theatre, it seemed the whole of Klang Valley had descended upon KLCC and you’d be forgiven for thinking that the financial crisis had somehow spared the country.
I was all geared to watch footie that evening only to find only the two matches shown live were the Chelshit-Bolton and Sunderland-ManUre. Outrageous! I sat through the former anyway (Bolton made an amazing comeback and I was actually cheering for them to draw) and wasn’t at all happy when I found (at the bottom left of the TV screen) that Arsenal were trailing by one goal as early as at the 19th minute. I had to wait until much later to see Walcott equalise after being fed by Shava who took a tumble in the penalty area. Minutes later, Silvestre gave a simple tap-in to give the visitors the lead after Shava and Cesc worked an opening from a throw-in.
Shava was instrumental/involved in the first two goals and scored the third one home after receiving the ball intercepted by Koumas and intended for Cesc. And in injury time, Song skipped through the Wigan defence after receiving a pass from Cesc and slotted home Arsenal’s fourth goal. Another Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde performance by Arsenal but at least they have the maturity and mental strength to not only come back from behind but also finish the game beyond doubt. As Cesc said it, my Gunners are just Fab!
BBC Sport Player Rater man of the match: Arsenal's Andrey Arshavin on 8.13 (on 90 minutes).
I slept poorly that night and yet woke up early on Sunday. No rest for the weary – cleaned up the main filter outside and washed the porch before tackling the dreaded ironing chore. I’m pretty sure I burnt thousands of calories in the process so that should make up for not going for my morning walk.
A Tale Of Two Halves
The
Super Outsiders visited the Yellow Submarine at Estadio El Madrigal with the now familiar 4-2-3-1 formation. Mind you, the Yellow Submarine have never lost at home in the Champions League and held holders Manchester United to a goalless draw earlier this season. And for the first hour, the Gunners looked like they might live up to their gaffer’s expectation.
We didn’t play well in the first half and to make things worse, we lost Almunia and Gallas too. Just before the break, Arsenal won a corner. Cesc’s free-kick found the back of the net but the referee deemed that he took it too quickly and he got a booking for that. He was lucky not to get a second booking for bringing down Capdevila. Though he
denied being spat on, he was at the receiving end of target of missiles from soft drink cans to coins from the home fans.
Then at the 68th minute,
like his Saturday’s brace expertly supplied by the captain, Adebayor chested in Cesc’s long lofted pass and acrobatically bicycle-kicked the ball into the corner with his back to goal (so, three assists for Arsenal’s latest three goals from our little maestro midfielder and three goals from Ade). And we were back in business.
The result means there still isn’t an English team to have won at El Madrigal, and Villarreal are still unbeaten here in the Champions League. But Arsenal will be happy enough to leave Villareal with a slight
advantage after a game of two halves.
BBC Sport Player Rater man of the match: Arsenal’s Lukasz Fabianski on 7.00 (on 90 minutes). The Pole didn’t even have the opportunity to warm up before only his second Champions League appearance, but was still able to keep Arsenal in the match, making a
magnificent double save at his near post only three minutes after replacing Almunia.
Two games down, five more to go. I reckon watching footie is much better than sex (but then again, what do I know). Right, Captain?
Oh and by the way,
good job Porto. Keep it up!
It’s taxing time now but I am happy to report that I have completed my online income tax filing. A bit later than last year though.
The Return Of The King
My total expenditure for March was a record: I can’t recall the last time I spent so prudently before. Sadly, it doesn’t look like I will repeat the record this month. It’s only the first few days of April and already I’ve been charging amounts to my credit card. Paid for fit-for-a-king meals at steakhouses on Friday and Saturday and also made some purchases on Saturday.The return of the shopping princess? Perhaps. *Sigh*
The weekend also kicked off the first of seven games in only 22 days for Arsenal. We hosted Sparky’s Man $h*tty on Saturday (ironically, our last defeat, was a 3-0 loss to Man $h*tty on 22 November 2008). And we were indeed bolstered by the return of the heartbeat of Arsenal (and the lord of my heartstrings) i.e. Captain Fabulous, Adebayor and Walcott. Captain Fabulous may have been absent for the past three months but he certainly didn’t look like he was out of practice at all, proving fabulous free-kick and assist that led to both goals (I’m not exactly a big fan of Ade but am happy that he scored) to kill off the game. The Boys Are Back In Town, alright.
So yes, Cesc is back with a bang. And all hail The Return Of The King – or rather the Crown Prince of Wenger Land.
Still more news on Barcelona’s reported interest in Cesc. Wenger seemed unmoved but has banned the Gunners from having contract negotiations until the season is over. As for Cesc, he has reiterated that he will be staying; he has also distanced himself from a summer move.
BBC Sport Player Rater man of the match: Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas 8.21 (on 90 minutes). Even Arshavin’s presence, the player of the month for March, took a backseat to Cesc’s return. The Russian was full of praises for his captain after their first game together.
Definitely a good way to usher in April matches. Happy days mate. And I dreamt of Cesc again. Happy days indeed.
The scorching hot humid weather gave way to torrential downpour yesterday evening forcing an early finish to the Malaysian Grand Prix. Jenson Button triumphed in first place again. C’mon McLaren/Hamilton, get yourselves in the race already!
Hari Ini Dalam Sejarah
Hari ini saya bercadang untuk menulis dalam bahasa ibunda saya setelah sekian lama. Mungkin kali terakhir saya menulis dalam bahasa ibunda ialah ketika menduduki peperiksaan SPM. Saya masih ingat satu hari (ketika saya di Tingkatan 5) saya telah membawa pulang latihan kerja rumah karangan saya dan meminta Abah membantu saya kerana saya langsung tidak dapat memikirkan bagaimana untuk menulis karangan tersebut.
Antara laman blog yang saya ikuti, hanya seorang saja yang berusaha menulis dalam bahasa ibunda saya. Saya amat menyukai blog penulis ini kerana saya mendapati nukilannya sangat menarik. Setiap kali saya membaca cerita beliau, saya akan tersenyum atau ketawa seorang diri kerana beliau begitu kelakar. Penulis ini sedang menuntut di luar negara. Di samping blog tersebut, beliau juga mempunyai dua laman blog lain, di mana salah satunya ditulis dalam bahasa Inggeris dan satu lagi dalam bahasa Inggeris dan Perancis. Jadi beliau seorang yang fasih dalam pelbagai bahasa (beliau juga sedang mempelajari bahasa Mandarin dan Jerman). Saya amat kagum dengan kesungguhan beliau menulis dalam bahasa ibunda dan kebolehannya menulis dalam bahasa Inggeris (penguasaan bahasa Inggerisnya sangat bagus!) dan Perancis.
Mungkin para pembaca tertanya-tanya mengapa saya menulis dalam bahasa ibunda saya hari ini. Sebenarnya begini: sejak kebelakangan ini, saya menyedari seorang pengunjung laman ini yang telah meninggalkan maklumbalasnya dalam kotak maklumbalas (atau coretan atas papan conteng siber) saya. Saya menyedari kewujudannya sejak saya menulis mengenai tuduhan meludah terhadap buah hati saya yang juga merupakan ketua pasukan kelab bola sepak yang saya sokong. Beliau menggunakan nama Harimau dan saya tahu bahawa dia adalah seorang penyokong kelab yang memakai jersi jingga berjalur hitam (seperti belang harimau) tersebut. Saya percaya bahawa dia bukanlah seorang yang memahami bahasa ibunda saya kerana kelab yang disokongnya itu tidak langsung terkenal di sini (malah saya sendiripun hanya menyedari kewujudan kelab tersebut pada permulaan musim ini). Pendek kata, kelab yang disokongnya itu tidak mahsyur langsung di negara ini. Mungkin ada orang yang tidak pernah mendengar langsung nama kelab beliau.
Sekarang pengunjung ini telah mengetahui nama timangan saya. Saya tidak begitu peduli tetapi mengikut pemahaman saya, dalam etika penulisan blog, kita seharusnya menggunakan nama yang digunakan oleh penulis blog dan bukan nama sebenar mereka ketika berkomunikasi dalam alam blog. Memang tidak dinafikan terdapat penulis yang menggunakan nama sebenar mereka – ini adalah pilihan mereka sepertimana saya memilih untuk tidak menggunakan nama saya. Tetapi Encik Harimau (saya mengesyaki bahawa dia seorang lelaki, jangan tanya mengapa) seolah-olah gembira semacam apabila mengetahui nama saya.
Blog saya ini bukanlah rahsia. Ia untuk kunjungan dan tatapan umum. Sesiapa sahaja boleh mengunjunginya dan boleh meninggalkannya bila-bila masa. Saya hanyalah seorang gadis biasa yang secara kebetulan meminati bola sepak. Di sini tempat untuk saya berkongsi pengalaman, perasaan keliru, perasaan gembira, sedih dan sebagainya. Namun, saya tidak pernah mengiklankan blog ini kerana saya sedar nukilan saya ini tiada yang istimewa, tidak semua orang meminati atau memahami bola sepak dan saya juga cuma mahu kekal sebagai antara jutaan penulis blog lain (satu lagi sebab ialah saya berkemungkinan akan mengutuk orang dalam blog ini. Malah sekarangpun saya memang sentiasa mengutuk kelab lain terutama sekali kelab Najis Haiwan - dan saya tidak kesal sama sekali malah akan terus berbuat demikian, ya, tanpa secebispun rasa bersalah). Jadi saya agak terkejut dengan kunjungan Encik Harimau terutama sekali kerana saya percaya dia bukanlah seorang rakyat negara ini. Mungkin dia sampai ke blog saya dengan menggunakan enjin pencari. Entah mengapa saya rasa tidak sedap hati dengan maklumbalas yang saya terima daripada Encik Harimau. Dan saya rasa tidak selesa sekali apabila beliau mula menggunakan nama timangan saya ketika meninggalkan maklumbalasnya. Saya amat tidak suka sama sekali.
OK, cukup mengenai Encik Harimau.
Esok, buah hati saya akan kembali beraksi setelah sekian lama. Saya tidak sabar menanti kepulangannya. Perlawanan esok merupakan satu daripada tujuh perlawanan dalam hanya 22 hari bagi kelab saya. Saya agak cemas dan khuatir mengenai jadual perlawanan yang begitu ketat dan saya seperti biasa akan berdoa agar kelab saya akan berjaya dalam perjuangannya. Syukurlah sekarang kelab saya mempunyai seorang lagi pemain berpengalaman di samping pemain lain yang sedia ada (kelab saya mempunyai ramai pemain antarabangsa; saya amat berbangga dengan fakta bahawa jurulatih kami langsung tiada perasaan perkauman). Walaupun saiz tubuh beliau agak kecil berbanding pemain lain, beliau seorang yang mahir dan berpengalaman (saya juga mendapati beliau agak comel – agak jarang kita bertemu dengan orang berkulit putih yang bermata sepet dan kebetulan saya suka orang bermata sepet - tetapi sudah tentu buah hati saya lebih comel dan kacak. Oh sekiranya buah hati saya meninggalkan kelab saya, saya tidak tahu apa yang saya akan buat: menangis berhari-hari, berhenti menyokong kelab saya, mula menyokong kelab baru beliau atau berhenti menonton bola sepak terus??).
Sekian untuk kali ini. Saya harus mengaku bahawa agak letih bagi saya untuk memerah otak saya menulis rencana ini (maaf, saya tidak dapat memikirkan terma yang betul). Diharap anda akan menikmati cuti hujung minggu anda. Oh, mungkin ada yang tertanya-tanya sama ada sejarah akan berulang. Kita tunggu dan lihat, sebagaimana kita tunggu dan lihat sama ada Encik Harimau memahami nukilan saya kali ini (sudah tentu ada kemungkinan dia berkongsi kerakyatan yang sama dan memahami coretan saya tetapi berpura-pura tidak faham supaya saya akan terus mengesyaki beliau bukan rakyat negara ini).
P.S. Adakah anda mendapati penguasaan dan penulisan bahasa ibunda saya bagus? Boleh dapat 98% bagi karangan? Maklumbalas dialu-alukan dan anda boleh menulis dalam bahasa ibunda atau Inggeris.
P.P.S. Setelah diamati semula, saya rasa coretan ini bertaraf penulisan penuntut Tingkatan 3. *Sedih*
Happy April Fools’ Day!
You may find these complaints made by holidaymakers so ridiculous and ludicrous, in fact as ridiculously ludicrous as any April Fools’ joke (I guess because those who complained are fools anyway). But this one is no April Fools’ joke: Beckham is apparently the celebrity we would most like to sit next to us in a plane. Beckham as a flight neighbour or not, I can’t wait for my next holiday (don’t think Cesc was on holiday as speculated here!)!
